We had to create a beer in the category industrial lager which would be able to sell itself without a marketing budget. Insight Industrial lager is a pretty bland beer that doesn't really stick out in any way. It's cheap and you know what you get every time you buy it. It might be perceived as a dull and safe beer but it offers a comfort and a friend in an ever changing world where new kinds of beer are developed all the time. Solution We wanted to create a friendly and inviting beer that would stick out in the shelves. The console was not supposed to go under the "Playstation" brand so we had to come up with a completely new name and identity. Since nintendo was going to release their new console this year as well, and it looked like they were going to go with a cheaper console (as they did with the Wii) I chose to work against an older and more affluent target group. Since the hardware had to be great, which would increase the price of the console. I chose the name octave, because it's the eight and highest note in a diatonic scale and worked with the octagon as a symbol.
